Our Thanksgiving Turkey Trot

So we're off to a great start.

We've decided to get in shape and run a 5K... or more...

and it's Thanksgiving...

What a great time to begin an exercise program right?

Our city always has a Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot 5K. While I would love to do this, it is $25 per person... and if you add up all the peeps in my family, this would be... um $175...

So we decided to do our very own Thanksgiving Turkey Trot.

We got up early (relatively) today and walked/ran/whined/biked/limped etc. for our very own 5K.

Yep. That's right. We did it.

On the first lap, the outside of my left calf was burning and cramping so much. I was thinking this was a huge, painful mistake.

I think I just didn't stretch enough. Once we got warmed up, it was easy to keep going.

We walked most of it. Jeff took off running initially with the boys, but his bad knee started hurting by the time he got to house #4 down the street. We fast paced walked the rest of the way.

Jeff and I jogged the last half of the last lap. It wasn't that bad. However, it was more like a bouncy walk.

As we rounded the last lap around the neighborhood, several neighbors started cheering and clapping for us. It was hysterical. And really felt good.

I took a few pictures of myself. It really reminded me of the movie "Yes, Man," and the exercise/photography class. Hehe. Enjoy the pics.

Sincerely,

Fat B

*(For the life of me... I can't remember if I'm a fat A or fat B... )

**(Fat A keeps reminding me that A rhymes with her first initial and B rhymes with my first initial... but I digress)

So what to do for tomorrow? Perhaps I'll get up with all the black Friday shoppers and run around WalMart? I somehow doubt it.

From fat a** to 5K...

We are just two average moms who have become great friends, despite the 700 miles between our homes. Between us, we have 9 children, ranging in age from 2 to 19. We both have husbands named Jeff. We both have children adopted from Ethiopia. The more we have gotten to know each other, the more common ground we found.

On this common ground, we found a strong desire to reach fitness goals, and a complete inability to do so alone.

We have decided to train for our very first 5K... with hopes of completing a half marathon. Next, we will attempt to conquer the free world... well, if you're dreaming, you might as well dream big. Right?

So how did we get to this decision?

We thought we'd share the text conversation to show how this idea evolved in about 12hours time...

Fat A: "I want to sign up for a half marathon in like a year and train for it. Maybe it will give me some motivation."

Fat B: "That sounds fun. I've always wanted to do that. Where ya gonna do that at?"

Fat A: "Have no idea. Jeff can't run that distance on his knee and I probably won't do it if I don't have anyone to do it with."

Fat B: "Awww I'd do it with you if I lived closer."

Fat B: "We could train on our own and meet somewhere... preferably Kansas because it's flat there. Ha."

Fat A: "I guess we could find one to do together next year and call each other on the phone during our work outs."

Fat B: "We could video call each other while running... That would be fun. How about a half triathalon... that sounds fun."

Fat A: "Yeah and we can start a blog about our adventure and make ourselves even more accountable."

Fat A: "I'm being serious! Are you? Cuz a triathalon sounds scary. What if we just start with a marathon?"

Fat B: "Wait. are you being serious?????"

Fat A: "I really want to run a half marathon. I'm not joking."

Fat B: "I'll do it if you do it... We should probably start with some 5K's though..."

Fat B: "Seriously..."

Fat A: "Are you really?"

Fat B: "Yeah. Why not? My Jeff and I would both do it."

Fat A: "Yeah 5Ks are good. But we have to eventually go to a half."

Fat B: "How long will it take to get ready for a 5K?"

Fat A: "At least a month or 2. I think you're underestimating my degree of laziness. We need to do it in the spring anyway for travel purposes..."

Fat B: "I found a 5K in Blue Springs in April and a 10K in Kansas City in October. It raises money for Special Olympics and the 10K is for AIDS epidemic in Africa."

Fat A: "Sounds great. What's the name of our blog gonna be?"

Fat B: "What were they thinking?"

Fat A: "From fat a** to 5K?"

Fat A: "Running away from home?"

Fat B: "Running at the mouth?"

Fat A: "From Fat A's to 5K's..."

Fat B: "That's it!"

Fat A: "Do you think people will judge us because there's an insinuated bad name in our title?"

Fat B: "I like it a lot. And to be honest... it's us. Not the fat a** part, well at least about you... but the honesty part."

Fat A: "I think it would make an EXCELLENT book title."

Fat B: "We'll be famous..."

Fat A: "Our first post should be about all the food consumed during the creation of this blog and the plan behind its conception."

Fat B: "Yes. Like the chili dogs and tater tots?"

Fat A: "And the fried chicken, corn dogs, chips and dips... "

Fat B: "I'm nervous..."

Fat A: "Me too. It's real now that we've declared ourselves."

Fat B: "I know..."

Lovingly,
Fat A and Fat B
